Microsoft unveiled Windows 11 officially today and plans to release early access builds of the operating system next week. The company revealed several new and already known features during today's presentation, including support for Android apps, performance improvements across the board, smaller updates that run in the background, and an improved Store.
Microsoft plans to release Windows 11 officially at the end of 2021. Many Windows users may wonder whether their PCs are compatible with the new operating system. It is safe to say that most PCs that run a recent version of Windows will be compatible with Windows 11.
Microsoft released a PC Health Check tool that reveals if a PC is compatible with the Windows 11 operating system. You can download the tool using this link, and run it after the download to install it. Microsoft notes that the data is only used for the app, and that it won't be stored or shared.
Check for Windows 11 compatibility
The application displays information about the PC it is run on after startup. It displays the amount of RAM and hard disk space, the name of the PC, and information such as the Windows Update status, backup & sync status, or the storage capacity.
Microsoft reveals in the app that the upgrade to Windows 11 will be free.
Select the "check now" button at the top to see if the PC can run Windows 11. You get a "This PC can't run Windows 11" message if it is not compatible with Microsoft's new operating system.
I ran the tool on a Surface Go device, by Microsoft, and was informed that it is not compatible with Windows 11. The prompt does not reveal the reason why the PC cannot run Windows 11.
A click on the "learn more" link opens a new page that reveals the Windows 11 system requirements.
- Processor 1 gigahertz (GHz)?or?faster with 2 or more cores on a?compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)
- Memory 4 GB RAM
- Storage 64 GB or larger storage device

- Graphics card DirectX 12 compatible graphics / WDDM 2.x

You may need to compare the requirements with the capabilities of the PC to determine why it cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. I could not find the reason though, as the Surface Go matches or exceeds all of the requirements listed on the page.
