Here is what Microsoft has in store for Edge in the second half of 2021

Microsoft updated the What's Next feature roadmap of its Microsoft Edge web browser recently, giving users and administrators a glimpse of the status of major upcoming features of the company's browser.

You find a list of all upcoming features below, starting with Edge 92, which is currently in Beta testing. Some of the features may be available already but need to be enabled as experimental flags.

Others are not yet implemented and it may take months before they become available.

Edge 92

Automatic HTTPS Mode -- just like Mozilla did with Firefox, Chromium-based browsers will get an Automatic HTTPS mode. Navigations to HTTP pages may be upgraded automatically in the mode, similarly to how HTTPS Everywhere works, but with options to enable this for all visited sites.

Autoplay default is limited -- the default Autoplay setting is set to Limit instead of Allow.

Browsing History natural language search support -- support for using natural language using content, description and timing information. Queries like "last month YouTube video on Lego" can be used to find content quickly. Previously, only title and URL keywords were searched.

Microsoft Endpoint DLP on Mac OS -- support for Microsoft Endpoint DLP on Macintosh devices.

MHTML files open in Internet Explorer mode by default -- Internet Explorer mode will be used when opening MHTML files by default, but only if IE11 is the default handler for the file type.

PDF documents page scrolling -- the ability to scroll a single page or two pages when reading PDF files in Edge.

PDF documents thumbnail navigation -- navigate through PDF documents using thumbnails that represent each page of the document.

Payment information syncing -- Edge users may synchronize payment information added to Edge across their devices.

Tab Previews -- displays a preview of the loaded site when you hover with the mouse cursor over a tab in Microsoft Edge.

Edge 93

Enterprise: initial preferences -- deployment improvements with the introduction of initial preferences.

Manage extensions from the address bar -- new extensions menu to hide/pin extensions, and manage them.

Picture in Picture from hover toolbar -- displays a toolbar when you hover over a video to launch it in Picture in Picture mode.

Remember last position in PDF documents -- Edge will remember the last position of PDF documents and display that position to the user when the PDF document is opened again.

Tab Groups -- tab grouping will be turned on in Edge 93 to group tabs for better manageability.

Vertical Tabs: hide titlebar -- hide the titlebar if vertical tabs are used in the browser.

Edge 94

4-week update cycle for Stable and Beta -- Microsoft will release updates in a 4-week cycle.

Automatic translations -- unknown languages will be translated automatically by Microsoft Edge.

Control-flow Enforcement Technology -- improved safe browsing mode on devices with supported hardware using hardware-dependent control flow for browser processes (supported Intel 11th Gen and AMD Zen 3)

Enterprise: new Microsoft Edge startup policy -- new startup policies that include specifying the start page, additional pages and "continue where you left off".

Enterprise: new policy to stop implicit sign-in -- ability to disable implicit sign-in in Edge.

Enterprise: extended Stable release -- Enterprise customers get access to Extended Stable releases of Edge which is support for eight weeks (instead of four weeks). Security updates will be released every two weeks.

Family Safety: improved protections -- improved protections on sites such as YouTube to block video content that is not allowed.

Family Safety: list of EDU sites -- ability to add a list of EDU sites to the allowed websites list with a single click.

PWA notifications -- notifications coming from PWAs will no longer show as if they are coming from Edge.

PDF documents: free form highlighting -- freeform highlighters are supported, e.g. to highlight content on scanned documents.

PDF documents: free form text boxes -- support for free form text boxes in PDF documents to fill in forms and add notes.

Price history in shopping -- the new Price History feature displays historic price data on Amazon and nine other shopping sites. Users see price changes and can compare the price of an item with the historic price data.

Edge 95

Collections citation support -- the Collections feature will support citations and reading lists.

Internet Explorer mode transition improvements -- referrer data, post data, forms data and request methods are forwarded properly.

Publish and update Microsoft Edge extensions using APIs -- developers may use new APIs to update and publish extensions directly without using the partner center.

Edge 97

PWA launching -- launch the browser in a PWA instead of the full native browser

No Target version

Authentication before password autofilling -- if enabled, users need to provide authentication before passwords are automatically filled in the Edge web browser.

Assistance menu new features learning -- highlight new features and the latest updates to users.
