Apple has released iOS 17.1 RC and iPadOS 17.1 RC to testers in the beta program. The update fixes two major issues that were reported by users.
Over the past few weeks, several users have reported that they were experiencing burn-in issues on their iPhone 15 screens. Many people had speculated that the problem could have been due to a hardware defect on the device's display. But it doesn't seem to be the case.
iOS 17.1 RC fixes image persistence issue on iPhone displays
The release notes that accompanied the iOS 17.1 RC update mentions that Apple has fixed an issue that caused display image persistence. It is rather surprising that this image retention was a software bug, but it should provide a sigh of relief for users who had the problem. Then again, the recent overheating issues were also due to a bug in the iOS 17 software, and not related to the Titanium frame like some rumors had alleged. Apple reacted quickly to issue a hotfix in iOS 17.0.3 to patch the bug.
Another notable bug that users had reported is keyboard lag in the operating system. I have experienced this issue on my iPhone 13 ever since I updated the device to iOS 17. This bug has been patched out in the iOS 17.1 RC update. The latest version of the software includes some more bug fixes. It improves the reliability of Screen Time settings across all devices. Apple says that it has resolved an issue that was causing the Significant Location privacy setting to reset, when pairing with an Apple Watch or transferring the wearable.
iOS 17.1 RC ships with crash detection optimizations for all iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models. The update fixes an issue that was preventing the name of incoming callers from appearing if another call was ongoing.
The new ringtones which were removed briefly when iOS 17.1 beta 1 was released are available once more. Custom ringtones and purchased ringtones are now available for selection under the text tone settings. The build number of the iOS 17.1 Release Candidate is 21B74. The change log for the update do not mention the security issues that were patched by the Cupertino company.
Apple will likely release iOS 17.1 to all users by the end of this month. It will add support for improved AirDrop file transfer. It now allows users to initiate file sharing and walk away from the range of the device they were sharing their files with, the sharing will continue over the internet via Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Users will be able to configure their connection preferences under the feature's Settings. The update will bring introduce some new settings for StandBy mode, and improvements to the Dynamic Island for all iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 models.
One feature that has been highly anticipated by users is yet to make its debut. I'm of course, talking about the Journal app that Apple had demoed during the WWDC 23 event. The company had said that the app, which would aid the mental health of users, would be coming later this year, so we can expect it to arrive with iOS 17.2 or iOS 17.3.
