Android 12 beta 4 released and when to expect the stable version

We are edging closer to the official release of Android 12 as the last beta version is finally released. This beta 4 version marks the last step in software testing before the official launch.

This latest beta version that has just been released focuses on fine-tuning the performance and stability of the OS. This release marks the platform stability milestone and means that all the app-facing surfaces and behaviors are ready to go. Now app developers can start planning their final testing with full knowledge of how Android 12 features impact their apps and make adjustments to ensure they are ready for the stable release.

Google recommends that all developers install the production versions of apps on a platform running Android 12 beta 4. This will allow them to test out their apps and see how certain features such as the mic and camera indicators and new privacy dashboard affect their apps.

There are currently no new consumer-facing features that have been picked up with the latest beta version. Beta testers will, however, be able to test all of the features announced by Google for Android 12 in this version.

Android 12 beta 4 released and when to expect the stable version

If you are already running any Android 12 beta versions, you should receive the OTA update to upgrade to beta 4. This release is available for Pixel from today. Other devices such as OnePlus, Asus, Oppo, Sharp, Realme, and ZTE phones will also be eligible to receive the update; however, each brand will handle its releases directly.

This final beta release means that the official release date is not far off. Google has finally been able to give us a roundabout timeframe for the release. There are still a few things affecting the release, so there is only a timeframe and not an exact date yet. For example, after this beta, Google can decide to do a release candidate (RC) or go straight to a stable release.

However, when looking at Android 11 last year, the timelines seem to overlap quite a bit. The first beta of Android 11 was released in June, and the final launch was in early September. Android 12 appears to be following the same timeline closely, with the final launch set for the end of August or early September.

Closing words

It is exciting to have the beta 4 version for Android 12 out. This means we are one step closer to the final release. If all goes well, Android 12 should be coming to our devices by the end of August or early September.
